What to Look For in a Wood Burner Clearance Sale

Efficiency

When looking for a clearance sale on wood burners, consider the effectiveness of the appliance. The overall effectiveness of a wood burner determines the amount of heat that is transferred to your home instead of going up the chimney. This directly affects how much firewood you buy and the frequency at which you burn it. EPA certified stoves must display the efficiency of their combustion and overall heating. To get the most bang for your buck, look for a stove made of wood that has an EPA-listed efficiency of at minimum 70%. More efficient means less waste, and you'll save money on fuel. This means less time stacking and chopping wood, as well fewer trips to your wood pile in winter snow storms. This means more time for cosy evenings by the fire.

Safety

The majority of wood stoves that are sold today have been tested for safety. Stoves not tested include stoves bought secondhand, stoves manufactured in small welding shops and antique stoves. The majority of insurance companies will not to issue policies that cover homes with stoves that aren't certified.

A stove that is certified will bear a label that indicates the minimum distance between the stove and combustible surfaces like walls and furniture. This information is also contained in the manufacturer's installation instructions. The manufacturer's test will also indicate if the stove meets the standard for fire resistance.

Even with the right clearances, the wood-burning tools could be hazardous. Children should be kept out of the tools and never allowed to be alone in a space in which a wood burner is in use. They can be surprisingly hot, and can burn skin and clothing in just a few seconds. Be sure to disconnect the device when you're not using it.

Safety from fire doesn't only concern building materials, it also includes anything that is kept near a stove such as rags and cleaning products. Keep blankets, curtains and throws away from the open space around the stove.

With the use of shielding, you can lower the clearances mentioned above. However,  second hand wood burning stoves  should always consult the manufacturer's recommended clearances and be on the safer side. Speak to your local building inspector or police officer if you're unsure if the material you use for shielding is suitable. They can verify that it meets the current standards for fire safety. Installing carbon dioxide and smoke detectors around the stove is also an excellent option.
